A STUDY ON THE ETCHING EFFICACY OF ENAMEL ETCHANTS

Abstract
The damage such as loss of enamel should be least, but the bond strength should be sufficient affer acid etching of enamel surface done for the bonding of bracket. The purpose of this study was to find the least harmful acid etchant compared to
phosporic acid etchant without the reduction of bond strength. Bond strength, surface change. and depth of etch on enamel surface etched with 50% citric acid, 20% lactic acid, or 10% pyruvic acid were measured and compared to those measured on
enamel
surface etched with 37% phosphoric acid as a control group. Polished bovine enamels were used for experiment of which etching time was one minute oninute. Bond strengths were measured in shear, surface changes after etching were observed with
SEM,
and
depth of etch wee measured using profilometer. The statistical significances were not confirmed between bond strenths of experimental groups and a control group. The depth of etch of experimental groups were less than that of a control group. But
the
structure of enamel etched with pyruvic acid was the most similar to that of phosphoric acid etched enamel. It was assumed that the least damage and the similar bond strength can be obtained by the using of pyruvic acid as an enamel etchant.
